Here is a good idea. Every time I open the newspaper in classifieds I always see guinea pigs, gerbils, rabbits just being given away. They want them to go to good homes usually, and this is a much better alternative than going to the pet store. Try it. And if you live in a small town, go to a close by town's newspaper as well. If you don't want to fork out the dough, usually the newspapers have an online website that you can access for free.
Hope this helps.
and go to guinealynx.com forum. They can always help you get in touch with other places. guineapigcages is another great website, but I'm not a member of the forum.
Guinealynx = Medical, behavior, and other things
Guineapigcages = Cage help, and great advice for you to give your guinea pig a fun, "popcorn happy" environment. I heavily reccomend both.
have u tryed looking in thrithy nickle they allways have pets for sell and since u get the newpaper from around the pets r near to!!
Pet World in Natick. I still don't think it would be a great idea to get a second one though. Be prepared to have a second cage setup if they fight.
Yay, I am glad that you have at least looked into adopting a guinea pig. One question, you can not travel 40 minutes (or whatever it is) to adopt? If not then I believe the next best thing, if you want a healthy guinea pig, is to find a reputable breeder. Not a backyard breeder. Please, please do not buy from a pet store, these guinea pigs often have mites and URIs. I live in Western Australia, as far as I know the only way that I could adopt (and believe me I searched far and wide) was if I shipped or flew a guinea pig in. But guinea pigs are not great travellers and the price was to great. In the end I contacted my cavvy savvy vet who in turn gave me contact details to a reputable breeder, who gave me contact details to another breeder who gave me contact details to another breeder and so on. That is how I have got my 3 girls. You could do a similar thing or you could use the following site:
http://www.rabbitandcavydirectory.com/..
This should help you find a good breeder.
Addition:
Before looking into a breeder, give this site a whirl, it is a different adoption centre locator to pet finder but I believe just as effective:

Addition:
The link I gave before did not work. Try this one.

well if you are positive that you are going to adopt (im happy that youre trying, since its the best thing to do) there are two things you can do
#1. wait. there are no guinea pigs at my shelter either right now, and if there arent any by the time im ready to get my piggies, i will travel farther.
#2. go farther then a half an hour away. as i said in #1, if there are no gp available then im going to travel about an hour to get my piggies. there are plenty piggles at that shelter.
i hope i helped and i am very thankful that you are using petfinder and adopting. dont give up hope, your destined piggie is waiting (at a shelter, of course) ;)
Well..if you cant find one to adopt go to a pet store and get one. Just make sure it lets you hold it and is in good health.
Thank you for looking into adopting and not buying!

Good Luck and Don't Give Up! Sometimes it just takes a little time to find one. Hang in there ~ there's a piggy out there needing a new home, and waiting for you to find him ~
We wanted to get another guinea pig for our other one when his friend died and we thought an older male would be good so we looked around and rung a lady who breeds guinea pigs up and she said we need a baby one about 5 weeks other wise older ones will fight to the death and 3 months is mature so look in the newspaper for guinea pig breeders and try to get a young one good luck.
Many rescues will meet you halfway to adopt a piggie. Heck, some of them will deliver right to your home! Check out the placement forums on GuineaLynx, Guineapigcages, and guineapighome.com and I'm sure someone can help you.
