Answers:
Rats are wonderfull pets and they are great with small children but i would advise getting Boys as girls tend to be a bit more hyper and squirm more when being held boys are much happier just sitting on your shoulder or being held for hours on end. also rats tend to be happier if kept in pairs as they are very sociable and can be lonely i had two up until recently and after Belle died Jingle has been so much quieter and seems lonely,. but i would deffinately reccomend rats over guineapigs or hamsters
If you and your son like rats, then you should get them one!!
Isn't it obvious??
(I know all that work cleaning cage, feeding etc. but if you like rats...)
sick
Yes, go for it. As far as I know rats are really good pets, much better than hamsters and gerbils - much friendlier and better to handle. Also a small child is less likely to drop and lose a rat than a smaller furry rodent.
well if your kid can handle a rat and your ok with it then get a rat
I loved my guinea pig! What a shame it didn't work out for you. However I have heard that rats are wonderful pets though I wouldn't want one personally. Talk to your vet - I should think that it's probably fine. After all, whatever the pet you'll be supervising your son anytime he's with the animal won't you? Good luck - and reconsider the guinea pig (I'm a fan!)
well, you can get a rat and train it to love and care for your toddler, and every thing will work out nicely. but why a rat?
go for it...i would love to get a rat myself, but havent got the room for it.it may help teach your son responsibility, he could be incharge of making sure the rats food is always full and that the rat has water.good luck and go for it
Do not get the rat right now, he is still to young to have it, when your son hold it the wrong way the rat will bite him.
Rats have such wonderful personalities. In my personal opinion, rats are better than most rodent pets (hamsters, guinea pigs, mice, gerbils, rabbits). Even your three year old should be able to handle a pet rat with no problem. They are almost all very nice. Rarely (if ever) bite and can get along with other rats in the same cage. One of the few rodent species where 2 males can live peacefully together!
I myself am looking into a hairless rat. I just can find a breeder of hairless dumbo rats in my area. I love the big ears.
Good luck! Hope I've been a little help.
rats are so cool yeah get one or two.
i love rats they are so clever.
your boy would love them.
Yes get a couple of rats, they keep mice away. doh.
Ugh! i hate rats...they are fat, carry germs, lazy, and not a very pretty sight to look at!!
Yea sure, just teach him the correct way to play with the rat and always make sure to watch him when he is playing with it. Also make sure to make it friendly enough towards human so it won't bite your son, that would be very bad. ):
Rats are usually much more friendly to humans if they have been handled by humans when they were babies--get a rat from a breeder who takes good care of them. Then the rat will probably never bite! Good luck :D
Yeah.Get a rat!~~
I have several rats, and five children, with my youngest child being a three year old boy. He just loves the rats and he is used to handling them- but remember any animal with teeth is capable of a bite, and all children need to be supervised when handling pets. Teach him to wash his hands after he has played with any animal.
Don't buy just one rat, as they are social animals and are happier living in groups of two or three. I have five females, and I love to watch them play and interact with each other.

Teej.
Well I think you should. If you and your son enjoy having rats as company get another! If you do I advise your to get two because rats are very social animals and they need someone at night to play with too.
just to add to every ones advice as no one has mentioned that you should get fairly young rats as they are more playful and easier to tame----- tame by offering treats. They also do not have a very long life about 4 to 5 years at the most.
If you know your three-year-old can behave himself around animals, and you can supervise him when he plays with the rat, then, sure ^^!
If you think there might be problems, just keep the rat in your room and let him watch you holding it first.
Either way, they're great little creatures =D. I'd say it's worth it.
I would if I was you. You seem to know rats and whats involved. I had 2 rats a couple of years ago and my kids loved them. And at least you dont have to take them for a walk when its raining!
