Vacating Squirrels?!?

We live in S. Florida on a preserve that until recently (about 1 month ago) was teeming with squirrels. We rather enjoyed their antics, watching them throughout the seasons, tree climbing, basking the sun, chasing and such. Now they all seem to be gone. The one thing I have noticed recently is the addition of a ferrel cat. Do you think the squirrels have vacated the area because of him? I can't imagine that he could have caught them all, there were so many!! Just wondering is anyone was an expert on wildlife behavior, as we sure miss our acrobatic friends! Thanks for the suggestions!

No the cat probably didn't catch them but I imagine that they decided that there was very little space and as you described they have a very large amount of them.So instead they moved over some where with more room so they can continue mating and enlarging there family eventually they will become so big they will split and probably part of the family will come back unless a new family moves in.
might wanna consider the natural enemies of the squirrel..
snakes, hawks, tires
try to put food out at night. They must have found a better place to stay- with more food.

I was thinking I was going to find a post about how to get rid of squirrels and, honestly, it's almost impossible.
However with you, something has happened because squirrels stick around and even if you trap then and relocate them, they come back.
This cat could very well be the reason. If you want your squirrels to come back, you'll need to relocate the cat.
Put bird seed out to feed the birds...the Bushy tails will come.
The squirrels that live in my yard seem to "leave" when the owls come into the area. Cats can definitely cause the squirrels to be cautious, but the squirrels are much better climbers and much more agile in the trees than the cats, so they don't typically leave just because a cats around. The owls, on the other hand, don't give the squirrels a chance, so any that can escape typically vacate the area until the owls leave.
Since you say you're in S. Florida, we have to consider the obvious - Alligator. The squirrels may have moved up into the trees with the appearance of some land dwelling predators. Keep a close eye on the pets.
If you're really taken by the squirrels, consider this an interesting study in their behaviour. They left in order to help preserve the species. If there is a food source, they'll come back without any coaxing, and it will be an interesting surprise when they do come back. Enjoy!
probably something happened
They went on vacation!
