my parents wont let me get a rat, because, well...its a rat. They dont realize that rats arnt disgusting animals, they are very clean, intelligent, playful animals that make great pets
I just cant convince them that rats make good pets. Any tips on how i can convince them?

卢Bring it up again sometime when they are in a good mood, but discuss the qualities first. dont mention what kind of animal your talking about until they are interested. Any chance you can get them to a pet store or a friends to see how smart and cuddly they really are?
Good luck. Rats really are the GREATEST! I have 2 and I love them to death!
say its just a hamster but bigger
My son wanted a rat and we said the same thing. We gave in and fell in love with Whiskers. He would ride on your shoulder, he would share chow with the dog, he was a happy go lucky white and black rat and we grew so mad for him.
Rats don't live long--you can inform your parents. About 2 years is sadly all you get with them, they don't smell like ferrets either.
Whiskers once choked on peanut butter (they can't have it as they have no way to swallow and if they gag they suffocate) and my husband gave him mouth to mouth until he was OK--shocking but true. When you watch an animal you love suffer and know seconds count, you just do what you can...
Whiskers was replaced by Maya, a little grey rat, she was very sweet although not as smart as Whiskers. She developed breast cancer (very common), both were put to sleep by a vet when they were obviously suffering.
They are great pets, I would recommend them to anyone. Friendlier and smarter than any other rodents and if you get them very young and handle them they are true members of the family.
We have Budgies now (birds) and they're great too. I like my kids to have and to raise pets, it's a great experience.
Good luck honey, I hope your parents relent. I doubt they'd be sorry if you're responsible.
Rats make excellent pets however you really need to get a pair (same sex). Rats are VERY social animals and with 2 they can occupy each other when you are not around. We have 3 females they are easy to care for and don't stink like everyone thinks. In fact ours are constantly cleaning themselves. You can litter box train them too. Do your research and save some money (don't expect your parents to pay for everything) start up is going to cost the most because you need a bigger cage then you would for a hamster. When you think you know all you need to know about caring for a rat try again. You could even show them these answers, parents that don't have a problem with rats like myself answering.
Good Luck!
well tell them that male rats really calm down fast and just get chubby and like to ride around in shirt pockets and on shoulders, they do not pee or poop out of their cages after they tame, it takes about 2 weeks to tame a male rat, get 2 males so they won't be lonely whey you are at school, gerbils are not as smart and they usually bite when you first get them, most rats never bite unless you grab their tails or pick them up by them, they hate it. also, rats actually LIKE their cages as long as it's big enough, i had one on my dresser in a 20 gallon long aquarium and never did have a top for it, rosco would jump out whenever i walked by and try to grab me, but if i didn't pick him up, he just went back in his tank and slept.
I don't like rats b/c their dingsly hangs out!
Take them to a pet store and specifically asks for someone who owns rats.
For example, I work at Petco and have owned several rats. When people ask what sort of small animal they should get, I always recommend guinie pigs or rats, depending on what they're looking for. Naturally, I get of a lot of wrinkled up noses, but I explain why rats are the best choice.
clean
intelligent - can be trained
affectionate
distinct personalities
rarely bite (I've encountered countless rats in my life and only been bitten by one)
hardy little critters - they can eat just about anything
their excrament doesn't smell very bad - unlike mice
their poo is easy to clean
i'm sure there's more, but that's off the top of my head.
Good luck! I hope you can convince them!
Try telling your parents how much this means to u.They're not going to be converted to rat-lovers,but at least they'll know how u feel.If u keep the cage clean, and the rat stays in your room(but goes outside too,of course!),I see no reason why your folks shouldn't let you get 1. Also:compare rats 2 other pets.As in,hamsters bite; rats don't,dogs are messy;rats=clean;cats run away;rats affectionate.and so on .Bottom line=if u feel strongly, your parents should support u.Good luck ! ! from: JOG4LIFEGRL's daughter
You've gotten a lot of good answers...
All I can say is try to get them to talk to some people who have owned them about it...
Also, see if you can convince them to go to a pet store and hold one or just look at them alteast...
You can tell them that they never have to see it...
You can keep it in it's cage inside your bedroom..
They won't have to care for it or worry about it ever...
Anothing thing to think about...
If it's just the tail that they can't stand..there are tailless rats...You have to find a breeder near you and it's going to cost a little bit of money, but they have the same attitude as other rats, they are GREAT pets, just like any other rat, they just don't have the tail...
Here's some sites on them:

Here are some breeders:
