She could have pregnancy toxemia:
If the sow was exposed to tempratures to 40C+ (100f) then they become hot. When the a sow is hot, any animal for that matter, all they want to do is lie down. Not only does the sow have her own body mass naturally absorbing and retaining heat but she also has the developing fetusus who act to further increase the mothers total body mass, thereby more heat is retained than normal. So because she is hot she just lies there, because she is not moving her heart does not need to beat as fast and the blood being circulated drops. The result in all of this is the gradual elevation of natural, toxic waste products building up from the developing babies. Often the pregnant sow is well kept after, in her own small cage with food and water at her feet. Therefore she really does not need to move and she eventually gets posioned by her own babies. Now after explaining all of that I have to say that I do not think that that is what your guinea pig had. If it was you would have noticed the following:
Her eyes may look glassy, and she doesn't want to move. When you take her out of the cage, her torso may feel stiff and she feebly complains as you examine her. When laid on her back in your hands, you notice this very rapid, uncontrollable twitching of the muscles of the abdomen and hind-quarters.
So what could it be you ask?
Breeding guinea pigs is very dangerous. The weight from the babies puts enormous stress on her circulation system and organs. Even with the best care, sows can suffer from dystocia, hypocalcemia, a prolapsed uterus, or pregnancy toxemia (which I have explained above).
Now this is all assuming that the pregnancy was what caused her death. There are more things than I can count using my fingers that can cause the death of a sow. Tumours, cysts, cancer, heat stroke, vitamin c dificiancy which leads to scurvy etc.
I am really sorry for your loss.
i'm sorry. that's so sad. maybe something went wrong with the pregnancy?
I am VERY sorry for your loss. That is very tough on both guinea pig and owner. I think that your guinea pig died because (if it was) her first pregnecy. She might have been young too, and then died from the presser of it all. Once again, I am VERY sorry for your loss. I have had guinea pigs for about 7 years now, and I am on my 5th guinea pig. I love him to PIECES, and, I am sure that I will BURST out into tears when he dies. I hope that he lives for a long time, though. Since it sounds like you took REALLY good care of your guinea pig, I think that you should get a new guinea pig. Don't worry, nothing, no one or no other guinea pig, will NEVER take the place of your guinea pig that just died. If you do decide to get another guinea pig, I think that you should get one from your local shelter. That way, you are saving a life!
Once again, I am very sorry for your loss. Thanks, and good luck!
Aww.. I'm SO sorry. I have two guinea pigs and I would be so sad if anything happened to either of them. I agree with the people above me, I think she may have died from her pregnancy, if something went wrong with it. Again, I'm so sorry.
OMG thats soooooooooooooooooooooooo sad!
sometimes things like this just happen. This happend to one of my rats once. If it helps you can email me.
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. How terrible!
This is one of the many reasons there are so many people against breeding guinea pigs - pregnancy put the sow's life at high risk. Guinea pig babies are born fully furred and ready to run straight out of the womb - so imagine how stressful having as many as six of these little buggers inside of your tiny body must be. The common causes for death in pregnant guinea pigs is typically hypocalcemia, meaning a calcium deficiency, and pregnancy toxemia, a general term used when a pregnant sow suddenly dies. Consider checking out the link to the article below on pregnancy toxemia.
Best of luck to you.
I am really sorry that happened. Her little heart might have stopped or something.I am really sorry.
