My gerbil was at the top of her tube and was thumping her hind legs. I know that it means danger but i wasn't trying to pick her up or was even near the cage. Her sister lives in the cage with her but was down below. She is 4 moths old. I made her go down the tube so she would stop, but afetr i left the cage she ran back up, turned around and started doing it again. Whats the matter??
Answers:
All gerbils thump their hind legs not neccesarily if they assume they are in danger. They use it to tell other gerbils that there is something wrong or perhaps they heard a noise or saw a person or other animal go past the cage and got a little frightened. Don't worry there's nothing wrong with your gerbils they probably just got a shock from something and the reason she returned to the spot she started doing the thumping was probably so she could look out for any danger and protect her sister from anything dangerous =)
Gerbils also thump as a means of commuications, not necessarily when they are in danger. I have had probably over 100 gerbils (I did a little breeding a few years ago) and they all seem to do random thumping now and then.
it is not only used for showing danger. it is a way of communication. (s)he may have felt that something was wrong or needed to tell there sister something
