What are things you have to feed a hamster?

Cuz' my friend has no clue what to feed the hamster..
Answers:
pet stores sell hamster foods. you can even give them lots of different kinds of veggies and fruits...but NO CITRIS FRUITS like oranges. and if your friend has a dwarf hamster...dont feed it too many fruits...this hamster is known to get diabetes very easily. hamsters also like various nuts and seeds (no salt). on occation you can even give them crickets and mealworms...they LOVE IT but it should be a rare treat.
Fresh water is a must.
Vegetables, like, chopped cabbage, carrots, greens.
Nothing hard.
Sunflower seeds, broccoli, cauliflour, Milwaukee Best.
The other answers are good advice but just an FYI, I had a hamster die because I didn't know that their teeth continue to grow. His teeth got so long that he couldn't chew and they're so small you can't really tell. Make sure your friend gives him chew sticks.
all the above answers are correct, but most importantly tell your friend to go to the pet store and get the food its cheap. dont give them too much lettuce as it gives them diarreah, and when picking their food at the pet store go for the stuff thats in the pellet form( all the food looks the same) DONT GET the mixture of sunflower seeds and other nuts, naturally they will pick all the sunflower seeds and its very fattening and unhealthy. also NEVER EVER give the hamster chocolate its poisonous.
Don give them too much cabbage as it cause liver problem for them.. i haf winter white for myself.. n i dun feed them wif cabbage..
I fed mine with nuts and seeds that were bought from pet stores. Sometimes I throw in small carrot chunks, corn or pea pods from the garden and wholemeal bread if I ran out of hamster food.
The main part of there diet is a tablespoon of the commercial hamster food mix you buy from any pet store. This is to be changed everyday, along with fresh water. Add small pieces of fresh fruit and veg to his diet slowly as this can cause an upset belly. Hamsters love broccoli, bananas, apples, mushrooms anyd treats from the pet shop like yogurt drops and a cereal bar to hang in the cage to keep his teeth chizzled down nicely.
Dont ever feed a hamster human treats like crisps, chocolates and sweets, you could well kill it!
Do avoid lettuce, it gives them the runs, and tomatoes, potatoes and onions are poisonous to hamsters.
First it depends on what kind of hamster your friend has. If its a dwarf hamster them it has more specific dietary needs then a Syrian hamster (large breed). All hamster need to be fed a pellet/seed mixture sold at pet stores and some chain stores with a pet department. Feed as much as they will eat daily. Now hamsters will hoard their food so chek for this in corners, under wheels, etc. before feeding again. We usually feed every other day for this reason. A dwarf hamster is treated like a diabetic hamster in that they can't be fed any corn, carrots, peas, commercial treats or any fruits. All these cause diabetes in dwarf hamsters and are to be avoided. A Syrian however can have a lot of different foods. They can have a variety of fruits, veggies, meats, boiled or scrambled eggs, cereals, etc..
II can be emailed for a complete list of foods for either hamster or a diabetic one. I wrote the list for my own use with my small animal rescue, but have had over 30 request for it in the last few months. Please use your email provider for your request, my lists are longer then petqna.com allows in responses. My email is wolfinator25840@yahoo.com Subject: (put your breed of hamster here). I will try to response within 48 hours. I get busy sometimes and don't have time for the computer with 93 pets to care for. All are treated like mine until they find new homes and are adopted out.
Hamster food like the stuff you buy at a pet store and just go to a pet store and they will tell you everything! :)
