What can I do for my Hamster?

So, I lost one of my 2 Russian Dwarf Hamsters last night. I was just wondering what I could do for the other as I am sure It will let lonely in the cage by itself. Any ideas of what i could do? Is there anyway I could introduce another hamster to it without them trying to kill each other? Thanks
Answers:
Yea- you can get something called a split cage. U buy a little net and it will hook up to any kind of cage. Just go to petco or petsmart, get another hamster for the lonely one and ask for a net to seperate the cage... bring the other hamster in its cage so u can have them help u attach the net right there and make sure that it is secure. Good Luck!
p.s. There are some pics of a split cage and some info... http://www.agsgerbils.org/gerbil_care_ha...
we made a large aquarium into a digging place, like a miniature desert for my hamster. We filled it about 3/4 full of sand and extended a habitrail tube into it so he could burrow.
Yes, you can get a buddy for your little guy, but try to get a young one. My hamster,Boo, died (heart attack!I actually took him to a vet haha) and I got him a little buddy and they were fine. In fact, they had babies!!
welll maybe you can get another russian dwarf hamster and put a little see through wall in the cage and put each hamster seperatley but in the same cage. If they start to fight i suggest not putting them together unless they are use to it... Im not sure lol just my opinion
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES put a 'new' hamster in with the one you have now. If by 'lost' you mean it died, and they were of the same litter, your other hamster may die soon, too ... they die between 2-3 years old. I know that you are sad, too, and you don't want your hamster to be sad, so play with it a bit more often, and be sure that it has good food and clean fresh water and a 'totally clean' cage ... and when this one dies, too, THEN you can get another hamster or two.
Not too sure but I think your Hamster will like some company.
I think Hamsters are cute and wish you luck with yours, sorry to hear about the loss of your other Hamster.
Lots of love xx
What you could do, to keep it amused is ,get in his wheel and start running ,then he will think ,now, how do you bloody like it,if you let me out i'll be f*****g gone pal.

What can I do for my guinea pig? I think she is dying.?

She won't eat or drink, the last she ate was some romaine yesterday morning. And she has drank only about 1 or 2 oz of water.
Answers:
There are 2 things that you need to do:
1. Start handfeeding her
2. Get an appointment as soon as possible with your exotic vet
1. Handfeeding -
You will need to grind up the days daily pellets in a coffee machine (or something of the like), 20 grams of the pellets to 5mls of water but you may need to add more water. You will need to feed her about 6 times a day. Then using a syringe with the restrictive top cut off, put the syringe just behind the front teeth and work your way to the back teeth until the teeth start grounding. Information on how much (app) you will need, pictures of the syringes and more can be found on this site:
http://www.guinealynx.info/handfeeding.h...
2. Call the vet -
You should do this before you start handfeeding your guinea pig and you should already know where to go in terms of vets. But if you don't then can use the following site:
http://www.aracnet.com/cgi-usr/seagull/v...
How long have you had her? Could be nerves if you just got her.
I suggest you take her to a vet if you think she's in danger. just to make sure... ^^
u should wait 12 hours and if she is still like that u might want to see a vet :(
if she goes 8-12 hours with eating nothing start syringe feeding her. she might start eating on her own after that. if not, take her to the vet. if you have more then 1 piggie, take her away for a little bit so you can see exactly how much shes eating.
Keep her warm, bring her to the vet.
take her to the vet immeditly something is wrong and u need professinal care
You didn't say how old she is or how long you've had her, which could be heavy factors.
You definitely need to start handfeeding her, so her gut doesn't go into stasis. See the info Buzzare gave you for links to handfeeding. A vet visit is in order.
Wait a couple of hours and if she still does it take her to the vet imedietly!
have you've been giving her fruit? fruit like red or green grapes strwberries or oranges give them their vitamin C which is essential in their diet.

What can i call my baby rats?

i have two males and a female the mother is called pheonix the male babies are black and whie and the female is white
Answers:
The Phoenix is symbolic of rebirth, hope, purity, chastity, marriage, faith, constancy, summer, eternity, immortality, and light.
It is an image of the cosmic fire some believe the world began and will end in. The Taoists called it the "cinnabar bird."
From that information..
- Female names: Faith, Hope, Chastity
- Male names - Cinnabar, Cosmic, Blaze (''fire'')
That's just an idea, if you want the babies to have names associated with the name of their mother (which I think is a neat idea).
"Fink" is a good rattie name.
How about "bRAT" for another?
stir fry
how about stuart (like the mouse from stuart little)
splinter?
"Nix" taken from the mothers Name
Well, you can call the 2 males one can be Oreo, and one can be dice, now for the girl maybe snowbell or tinkerbell..try these.
Why not Tucson ,Yuma, and Pima..the names of three other cities in Arizona?
One of the males should be called "templeton" like on Charlottes Web. The female snow and the other male, umm, Frank? I don't know! : )
UM...wELL...UH...RAtS..D0Nt REALLy kNOw ANy NAMes...FOr..RAtS...SRRy...ii GUESS..yOU COULD NAMe iiT ANy THiiNg...=]

Sheena(a very pretty girl)
Lloyd(very nittwited)
Zelos(very VERY annoying)

What can hamsters eat?

I just got a 6 week old hamster yesterday. I think she is a cream Syrian. She is a yellowish,whitish,creamish,tan... color. What can I feed her? Please give a well thought out list of what hamsters can and can't eat. Oh, and I know that they can eat hamster mix from a pet shop. May the best answerer win! Help!!!!!!!!!!...
Answers:
Excuse me while I direct you to some Experts. There is Much more to the Hamster than just Food. PLEASE, do Them the Favor of Spending a Lot of Time Reading. They will Love you For it!
%26lt;Hugs>
hamster food, you can get from almost any pet store, apple, lettece, DONT feed carrot, it goives them diarha
other hamsters
Hamsters can eat carrotts, grapes, apples and pineapples, sunflower seeds, corn, and whatever you find in most hamster food.
But, out of those, I recommend that you give your hamster carrotts and corn and probably some lima beans... (all uncooked, of course)
HAMSTER FOOD! they like veggies and bread too. dnt frgt water.
You may feed them lettuce and i think thats about it!
i have had two dwarf hamsters and they loved baby carrots, or cut up carrots, grapes, not celery though because its too stringy. I also got them treats from the pet store, they loved this thing called yogurt drops itsfor small animals like hamsters. Just make sure that whatever food you give him (besides mix from the store) take it out the next day, it has to be fresh! and just becareful though in leaving things near their cage because they will eat about anything...i lost my tumble weed because he chewed a hole through a plastic bag i left too close to his cage. very sad. Hope this helps!
hamster mix is fine, but she will need some fresh food as well. lettuce, cucumber, broccoli, apple, grapes etc. but no cabbage. a little bit of cake or biscuit once in a while does no harm and give her a mineral stone as well, to ensure that she is getting everything she needs.
I recommend that yoghurt drops are a very rare treat. Hamsters also like the occasional bit of milk, but again only in small amounts as it contains fat. I like to give my hamsters a little bit of milk on my spoon which they can lick off.
Hamsters like to eat an occasional bit of protein. They love small amounts of plain meat such as chicken, eggs are also a favourite. Some protein about once a week seems to go down very well.
A hamster can eat a large amount of fresh vegetables and fruit (avoid potato roots as these are suppose to be poisonous). Feed the vegetables or fruit in small amounts to begin with and do not give them much lettuce as this can make them ill with diarrhoea. Favourite types of vegetables are carrot, courgette, peas, cress and cucumber. Cucumber is particularly good as it is a source of water. Pups can nibble it before they can reach the water bottle or an old or ill hamster can eat it instead of going out to the water bottle. Hamsters also love dandilion leaves, give a dandilion leaf to a hamster and it is likely to be gone within seconds, just make sure that no one has treated to plant with weed-killer and wash the leaf.
Hamsters eat cooked rice and pasta, and uncooked pasta but they seem to prefer it cooked. They like to eat pastry, cooked and uncooked. Cheese is popular in small amounts. Breakfast cereals are nearly always very popular, just be careful in case the hamster decides to climb into the bowl of rice crispies.
You can give them a variety of nuts, such as walnuts, brazils, almonds and hazelnuts at Christmas. When they are in the shells the hamster can chew at them to wear down his teeth, but you will normally need to crack them so that the hamster can eat the nut. My dwarf hamster loved walnuts in particular.
they can eat sugar free cereal, oats, carrots, dried fruit, yogurt drops, timothy hay, sunflower seeds, crackers, nuts, carrots, lettuce, fresh broccoli, banana and unseasoned crotuons. my hamster loves treats! good luck!
Well I had hamsters at one point in time, and I use to feed them lettuce, carrotts and radishes.. which they preferred over the hamster food bought at the pet store. Believe it or not there are also treats for hamsters that give them vitamins and good teeth, remember to put something in the cage for your hammy to chew on or his teeth can grow so long that they can cause death to your hammy. Also I believe there is a powder you can mix with the water for vitamins and minerals for your hammy. I have also snuck cheese to my hammies in the past, and being of the rodent family, they gobbled it up. I tried peanutbutter once, but it's too messy. Veggies are good for them as well as vitamins to keep them healthy, and remember to exercise your hammy with a wheel, or a hamster ball at least every other day so you do not get a lazy hamster. Also, they are nocturnal (night time animals) so they will probably do most of their eating at night.
My son has hamsters, so cute they are. We give them lettuce, or cabbage , they like both. carrots, turnip or swede and we give small pieces of apple , but only occasionally, Nice fresh water every day. We also make sure they have a small piece of sweet wood for their teeth as they like to gnaw. little branches of either willow , apple or hazel . Makes a big difference at night, stop麓s them gnawing at the wires on their cages. Hope you enjoy your hamster , they are very nice pet麓s to have . I love to watch them at night.
dont really feed it our food.
they could eat:
vegetables, fruits, breads, nothing with seasons or extra flavors, and there food, not to much though they will get used to it and not eat their real food.
they shouldnt eat:
meats, any kind of drinks other than water, plants, meats, candy, and anything else i didnt mention.
you can find treats like these growing plants for them but if you do get them dont feed them the roots, the dirt or any dead parts.
oh they can have dog biscuts for their teeth.

hope the hamster is fun!

I find it very helpful!!
If this doesn't help go to google.com try to find you're answer
Everything everyone has mentioned, plus, people don't usually know that you can feed them ground beef. They love it, but you should only give it to them about once a week, tops.
Hamsters are omnivorous, which means they eat both vegetables and meat. Their natural foods include grains, seeds, vegetables, and insects, and they will like corn, oats, or wheat mixed with dry dog food. Premixed hamster food from a pet store has complete nutrition, but some hamsters won't eat it.
Their favourite foods are foods native to their dry habitat, like seeds. For protein and variety, they will eat some small insects.
They like vegetables, but be moderate in how much you feed them. The key word for the hamster diet is *variety*. It keeps them healthy.
But don't feed your hamster chocolates and other sweet things.
Either feed the hamster at the same time each day or leave a constant food supply. Hamsters will not overeat but will often store food in their cheek pouches and put it in a hiding place to eat later. Remove food that is no longer fresh each day, and clean out the "hidden" food once a week. Put food in heavy ceramic or plastic food dishes (so they won't tip over) and clean them weekly.
Hamsters need to have fresh water constantly available. The best sort of container is a drip bottle, which can be attached to the side of the cage. A bottle with a wide neck and metal top will be easy to clean every other day. The hamster will quickly learn how to sip from it.
Good luck with your little cutie!

What can guinea pigs eat?

I want my guinea pig to be happy, I dont have any toys for her because I've ran out of money and I dont know what stuff to feed her =[.
Answers:
I am a proud owner of 4 guinea pigs and I learned from a magazine that they LOVE dandelions. My piggies just love them! Make sure that nobody has sprayed them. I'm sure your neighbors would be delighted to give you some. You can also give them grass that hasn't been fertilized lately or fresh fruit or veggies. I'm sure that your parents would borrow you money for the sake of your pet.
I have a guinea pig and she loves the guinea pig food you can buy at the store. She also likes fruit, such as apple, grapes or strawberry. She likes some vegies too like celery, carrots and more. Oh yea she also likes grass that i pick outside. But one of her favs is WATERMELON!! hope i helped! =]
try oxbow.com for pellets, or if you can find kaytees brand pellets, without added bits or seeds. you can usually find it at walmart or other stores. vegtables are needed too. here are the ones it can eat
http://www.pimms-pages.co.uk/forums/foru...
http://www.aracnet.com/~seagull/guineas/...
its also need unlimited timothy hay 24/7. they are strict vegitarians, so no meat, dairy, or anything like that.
here are free or almost free toys you can find around the house
http://guineapigcages.com/toys.htm...
hope i helped
good luck
Most everything a rabbit can. Carrots, lettuce, spinach and most all leaf greens, including carrot tops. They also need the cereal nuggets sold in pet stores for the grain. You also want to add vitamins to the water. Guinea pigs do not play. They chew. Find some safe wood for her to gnaw on, or her teeth will grow into her bottom lip. They use chewing to shorten them.
Trust me ! Oh and I remember that what your asking is the first ever question I asked on answers so I think that is cool . Ok well i have 2 Guinea pigs right now and I use to have hamsters but the moved on because it was their time . So I am a rodent pet expert ! Well a guinea pigs favorite treat is a carrot . They love carrots it makes them happy . You should also be feeding them their normal pellets and water . You can also feed them lettuce , apples , parsley is another on of their favorites . So if you ever go out to eat and you get parsley with your meal you can bring it home for you guinea pigs . I do it when I go out to eat . They also eat celery . Theres a lot more so you can also get a book on Guinea pigs or ask your vet for any suggestions too . Hope this helps . Good luck !
I had a guinea pig for many years. sadly he died of old age, but he lived a good, long, happy life. He loved eating carrots. I would give him two baby carrots everyday. Also, grass is good for them too. You probably shouldn't give them grass everyday, but every now and then is healthy. I always bought this trail mix guniea pig food for mine, he seemed to like that a lot. Another thing I did was whenever I changed his water I would put two drops of these guniea pig vitamins in it that were suppose to be really good for him. Also, I got this old shoe box and cut out a little doorway in it for him and he liked to sleep in it. He also liked to eat it, lol. If you do that make sure there aren't any stickers or staples inside the box. Alright that's all I can think of for now. Hope I've helped!
For food, you need guinea pig pellets, timothy hay and fruits and vegetables. You also need to provide fresh drinking water at all times. Here are some vegetable and fruit suggestions:
Vegetables and fruits that are SAFE for your guinea pig:
-carrots
-cucumber
-strawberries
-bananas
-green, red, and orange bell peppers
-parsley
-ROMAINE lettuce
-SMALL pieces of celery
-spinach
-grass (free of poisons and chemicals)
-apples
-oranges
Fruits and vegetables that should only be a TREAT:
-raspberries
-broccoli
-cauliflour
-green part of a carrot
Foods you should NEVER feed your guinea pig:
-corn
-cabbage
-potatoes
-ICEBERG lettuce
However, you HAVE to present a guinea pig with ALL of these foods EVERYDAY 24/7!
Clearly, you are not researching about guinea pigs enough. Either, get some money, or get rid of your guinea pig.
My guinea pigs are happy with eating celery, carrots, romaine lettuce, apples, oranges, and a pretzel (only sometimes). They also eat Hartz Bonanza Guinea Pig Gourmet Diet. They also can eat Nilla Wafers, but those aren't all that healthy for them.
they can have grass fruit veggies and any kind of guniea pig food and treats made for guinea pigs. as long as shes getting vitamins from her food u dont need to worry about that but if shes not there are these dropletes u can put in their water when u fill it up to give them the vitamins thay need. hope everything goes well.
well other than guinea pig pellets, you can go to this link:
http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?...
and give them these fruits for Vitamin C
Just one question first, if you have no money how are you going to take your guinea pig to the vet if she needs to go?
Toys can be made from home using simple resources, things like toilet rolls stuffed with hay and parsley, 4 inch PVC pipes, cardboard boxes made into igloos or houses, old sock with a tennis ball at the toes - fill the rest with hay, there are plenty of toys that cost almost nothing that can be made from home.
http://www.guineapigcages.com/toys.htm...
Guinea pigs are herd animals by nature, thus why they should be housed in pairs. Please consider getting a same sex cage mate, 2 guinea pigs are often more active.
In terms of food, guinea pigs need a good plain pellet and hay which should be available at all times. Hay not only files the teeth but it helps with the digestive system. If you guinea pig is under the age of 6 months than she should be fed Alfalfa hay and Alfalfa based pellets, if she is over the age of 6 months than she should be fed Timothy hay and Timothy based pellets. For pellets I would recommend Oxbow, for hay I would recommend Kleenmamas Hayloft.
Oxbow:

Guinea pigs should be fed at least 1 cup of fresh produce a day, this should mainly be made up of leafy greens with things like bell peppers/capsicum, baby carrot (1 per guinea pig), parsley, cilantro, celery, cucumber as side plates. The following site has a list of vegetables and fruit.
http://www.petwebsite.com/guinea_pigs/gu...
Guinea pigs can not make their own vitamin c, thus why you have to provide it for them. Avoid the drops you put in the water as it basically disintegrates, but chewable (kids) tablets and syrup are fine. Although if you are feeding her high vitamin c foods you should be fine.

What can gerbils eat?

ok so i got these two adorable gerbils and of course they can eat gerbil food but what other foods con they eat like a vegetabel a fruit? can they...and please have correct information because i dont want to get the gerbils sick
Answers:
stop sayiing my name on the internet JULIA.
Gerbils eat carrots?
okay supriningly MY gerbils used to eat carboard and paper and the male (dad) would eat his young
but they can eat potatoe carrots celery and brocoli for sure but only in small diced up amounts and nuts, seeds(sunflower with shell) but thats i all i kno
i have a chinchilla and a guinea pig theyy are related 2 gerbils at least thats what petsmark told me!
they love veggies!!
go 2 petsmark and get the veggie garden salad it has alot of the good stuff and they have some timmithy hay in it 2!!
if you buy some tell me how it works!!
apples (remove the seeds)..grains...oatmeal or unsweetened cereal..anything...as long as u dnt give them too much.when you feed them fruits or vegetables with seeds kindly remove them...seeds can prove they are fatal to most rodents.
wish you all the best!! say hi to them for me...!! hehehe!
They can eat lots of different fruits. Mine likes apples, oranges, and kiwis. (Slice them into manageable pieces, place them in a food dish separate from the one you place their regular food in, and be sure to take it out after four hours to avoid spoilage and bugs.) You can also OCCASIONALLY give them and unsalted shelled peanut. They really like peanuts, but you must be careful b/c these are very high in fat. If you do this, you may only want to try it about once or twice a month. My gerbil also really likes yogurt treats and the occasional cheese treat (not cheese for humans--cheese treats packaged specifically for small animals). Hope this helps you add some variety to your gerbils' diet!
Rodent blocks are best. Too many sunflower seeds are bad, they're very fatty. The rodent blocks are 100% complete so only feed treats sparingly.
Don't feed lettuce because they'll get diarrhea. Remove seeds from veggies and fruit. Carrots, apple, sweet potatoes, broccoli, squash, strawberries, berries, hard things to file their teeth, etc. Don't feed avacadoes. Try to locate a gerbil safe food list online for toxic foods not to feed.
as treats i SPARINGLY give mine slices of apples, slices of carrot, slices of celery, and PLAIN cheerios. you can also try grapes, but mine had no idea what it was and they didn't even do anything with it.
also any treats you find at the pet store that are for gerbils
they also like cardboard tubes to chew, a good use for them after you finish the roll! my mom always knows to give me any empty paper rolls!
bananananannanananas
carrot sticks

What can be done to make a hamster stop chewing on the cage bars?

Driving me bonkers!
Answers:
I won't lie to you--I had this same problem with my first hamster (little brat kept my roommate and I up all night with it, it was awful!), and I wound up getting a tank for her, and made her second cage.
Another option is making a bin-style cage, since you mentioned that the tank wasn't ventilated well. Bin cages are fun because they're bigger, hamster can't bite the sides, and there's more room to keep things in there to keep it distracted!
Another option that I've heard of is spraying this stuff called 'Bitter Apple.' I've heard of desperate hammy owners spraying this (in moderation!) on the bars, and the taste can deter the hamster from chewing. I've seen it for sale in pet stores, but haven't tried it myself.
Some hamsters are just completely stubborn and will ignore their chew toys and try their damndest to get out of their cage.
As far as bin cages go, give it a thought. They can be a little tricky to make (maybe you have a friend or family member that's good with handiwork? I had my boyfriend's dad help me with mine), but they are worth it, and look pretty too. :) Good luck!
Pretty much nothing, other than buy him some chew treats the keep him busy.
Let him outta the cage.
hamsters like to chew, it feels good on their teeth which are open-rooted and grow through their whole lives, so chewing on things keeps them filed down.
-- get your hamster something else to chew on, like a treat stick or just a plain little piece of wood (i've seen them in pet stores flavored or shaped like carrots).
if that doesn't work and your hamster still chews on the bars (when i worked at a pet store, there was one dwarf hamster who i think just liked the sound it make when she chewed on them), you can put a little bit of lemon juice or something bad tasting like that on the bars. if you don't have any lemon juice or that doesn't work, i know they sell things to put on the bars that work about the same way.
give it something, like a peice of wood, to chew on. natrualy, the chew on hard stuff to keep there teeth from over growing, and cousing infections. you can also give it a salt weel, because it tast good to them.
if not, it will probly keep chewing on the cage.
soak the cage in bitter tasting goo...
it should keep him away from it
sounds a little mean, but Tabasco sauce or something that's safe but tastes yuck for them wiped on the bars, make sure you do have plenty of treats and chew toys for your pet
A simple way to fix this is to get a glass cage. A 10 gallon tank with a screen lid works great for hamsters. No more bars.
Make sure he has an exersise wheel to run it.
Another solution is to give your hamster other things to chew on. You can try whole walnuts in the shell, dried corn, no sugar added dried fruit, dog biscuits, compressed hay, and a whole bunch of other things your pet store sells for hamsters.
It's very common for hamsters to chew on the bars. It may be one of those things you just have to live with.
GOOD LUCK. ours did the exact same thing... they are nocturnal. Which means they are more active at nite. Plus make sure he is fed daily. But he is just wanting out to roam around. But that wouldnt be a good idea... at least i dont think so..
Nothing.Hes gonna do that.Move him to another place where you cant hear him like down the basement or somewear. No wear cruel though.
since you have introduced chew toys, i will not mention it anymore then :).
sometimes, hamsters chew on the cage bar to catch your attention. Sometimes they need your attention, so try and see what it wants. :)
Good Luck :)
Sabby
My hamster stopped chewing bars when I give him a running wheel. Though his cage is big, he was bored without wheel. So if you hamster hasn't a wheel, you can try to give him it - the wheel should have at least 8 inches in diameter for Syrian hamster and 6 inches for any dwarf hamster.
Or you can move him into a (at least!) 20 gallon long tank/bin with a wire mesh lid - then wouldn't be hot in there.
Give him something else to chew on, a rock, a piece of dry wood. improvise.
YOU CANT RELLI STOP THEM MY HAMSTER USED TO DO IT ALL THE TIME UNTIL I GOT HER SOME NEW TOYS FOR HER CAGE WHEN THEY BITE THE BARS IT MEANS THERE BORED
HOPE THIS HELPS
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX...
hamsters have a natural desire to chew and this is because their teeth never stop growing-kind of like fingernails. it is not hurting them to chew on the bars of the cage , however it probably means that they are not being given enough things to chew on. try giving them different types of wood blocks made for small animals such as niblet munchies and bunny bites. this is flavored wood and most hamsters love it. you can also give them empty toilet paper rolls to keep them busy. to discourage them from chewing on the cage, you could try using some bitter apple funiture cream on the bars. good luck:)
Hamsters tend to bite on the cage bars, because:
-they want to get out
-they want attention
-they just like biting on the cage bars
It's nothing bad, normal, my hamster does it too.
Maybe garlic will help. Get the spread type and swipe some on bars

What can be a the cause of us having mice in our apt?

i saw a couple mice this morning in the apartment and they were on the shelves but i dunno how they got thier thier so tricky to deal with
Answers:
They come in from holes in the walls. All holes need to be sealed with steel wool (they can't chew thru). Don't leave any food out including pet food if you have pets. You or the apt. management should buy inexpensive traps or bait. Good Luck!
If you are fairly new to the place well its could have been a problem for the whole apartment complex. If its a new problem and you have been there awhile there may be a new construction nearby. New field clearing or and old building being renovated causing a lot of disturbance and making them seek new homes. Best thing to get is a cat if you can stand them and are allowed to have them. Posioning and traps cam become stinky and messy, plus it doesn't stop the rest from coming.
try and keep food away from shelves and counters.
instead, make sure all food items are sealed away, and kept in the refrigerator or cupboards.
mice tend to find holes and crevices to get in, to scavenge for food.
so try to minimize all foods away from being out in the open.
make sure your keeping food sealed tightly and without them being able to reach it. It sounds like there coming in from somewhere you must have a hole somewhere. I would call the maintence men right away and have them take care of this problem
Havahart traps work, but you may not want to concern yourself with "live disposal". Standard "hammer" type traps work just as efficiently, are cheap and can be thrown away with the dead mouse. Glue traps are another option, but I don't like them because you are left with a mouse that will or has already starved to death (small mammals will do so within two days) and they seem less humane (Which would you prefer: starvation, waiting for your captor to find and kill you or a quickly broken neck?).

What can you do about the scent of a dead rat coming through your vents?

Answers:
You want to try and remove the rat if possible. If you are in an apartment... you should demand it. It happened to me this spring at work...unfortunately the custodians couldn't get to it. They just told me to wait a few weeks and it would go away. It wasn't great there for awhile, but it did eventually go away.
Good luck.
do this poot incents near it. there like sticks happend to me to!!
Try cleaning out the vent and spray some FreBreeze or lysol or something. I really couldn't answer this.
get rid of the dead rat. that's the only way to ger rid of the smell.
Sounds like you need to call a pest control company and get ahold of their wildlife division. That can be spendy, but the'll get it taken care of.
bad smells
You can always go into the city and find a stray cat and give it a meal. Then you should borrow someones kid and cover them in soap and put them in there to clean it.

What cages??

I am thinking about 2 dwarf hamsters and i would like to know if they could escape from one of those habitrail cages or if you have any suggestion please tell
Answers:
Hi Ethan,
Two dwarf hamsters will not escape from a Habitrail, but I would not suggest getting this brand of hamster house. As you most likely know, habitrails are made mainly of plastic. The plastic enclosure prevents air from circulating and could lead to a very hot, very smelly hamster. I would suggest looking at different types of wire cages. These circulate air very well. Just make sure that the distance between the cage bars is less than the size of your hamsters head. If a hamster can fit their head through an opening, they are able to disjoint the rest of their body to fit through it as well. So, as long as you make sure the space between the bars is less than the size of your hammies head, you should be fine.

ive had a drarf hamster and any cage that is meany for hamsters are good.
nope a cage big enought for both is the best thing and they love their exercise wheel =)

What cage should i get?

I CAN"T DECIDE!! I want a new cage for my hamster she isn't a dwarf but is kinda small here are the choses
cage1 (i think i like its look better, but is it good enough?http://www.petco.com/product/15483/super...
cage2 (has levels and i will get a new wheel for ithttp://www.petco.com/shop/product.aspx?s...
cage3(I also like this a lot but is it any good?http://www.bunnybasics.net/images/critte...
Answers:
Cage #1 Looks cool awsome tubes and lotsa room... but it'll be a pain to clean.
Cage #2 Good cage but you're hamster might climb and fall and that might not happen but I still dont like it... Bit it'll be easier to clean
Cage #3 Looks like Cage #1 But Still like #1
donno why but I do.
i like the 1st one better like you do! it looks so cool and hamsters LOVE tubes! Have fun!
I haven't owned a hamster since I was a kid but I remember mine loved those Habitrail cages with all the plastic tubes and different compartments. They love to crawl and burrow around...
I like the first one the best. Its colourful =D
cage 2 is the biggest, it looks like, which is usually the best, but you also need to get a wheel for it. with one of the others, you could get tubes and connect a few together, though.
you should get the first one then later buy the third one and then your hamster will have tons of room
I would recommend the first one. There is a fun wheel in it, there is some good room, and, I am not sure, but you might be able to add more tubes to the cage! Can your small hamster climb through the tubes? I have two female dwarf hamsters, and I read that they don't like second levels and that they are too small to go through the tubes. Is yours like this? I was just woundering, and making sure. But, I am sure that your hamster will be fine!
Thanks for taking this answer, and good luck!
My sister has a hamster and I have a gerbil and we both have that cage for them. I love it it is easy to clean and they have lenty of room and they sell attachments to add on to that cage. Defiantly get that one your hamster will love it.
i like the first one. it looks like a lot of fun for ur hamster they love those tube things. also just know that the wheel ball thing on top might turn into a bed or that other spot on top. i used to have a hamster and her wheel was on the side of the cage. she used to put bedding and food in there and she also had another compartmend on the other side of her cage (much like the one on the top left of urs) that she would sleep in. she was really cute. her cage was basicly urs but the wheel and sleeping area had short tubes to get in and they were on the sides. good luck!
ps it might help if u put a pic of the cage u have on so that people have somthing to compare the new ones to/
cage three
This one:

Because i have had the same kind as the other two, [mine was bigger] and they are a pain in the rear to clean. its such a hassle, and not worth it. I would pick the middle
i prefer the first one it look more fun in it. But is a bit too cramp

What cage should i get for my hamster?

What cage should i get my hamster, like what type.
Answers:
The wire cages that are being suggested are really not good. Not only could the hamster fall from quite some distance as it climbs higher up the bars, but if you hamster is a very determined one, it could develop bar rub- a condition where the fur on it's nose and face is rubbed away as it obsessively chews on the bars. Just do a quick search here on petqna.com s and you can see the number of hamsters that have this. I just answered a question about "fur loss on my hamsters face between its nose and eyes" a few days ago. In more serious cases, the hamster will actually chew at the bars to the point that the bars will cut its face. In the worst case scenario, the hamster will permanently loose its fur on that part of its face and develop scars and callouses. I'm not trying to scare you, just offer you the best advice that I can. The other terrible thing about those cages is that the wheels are far to small for anything but a mouse or dwarf hamster. The only thing those cages have going for them is their price.
The Crittertrails and SAM cages, while fun looking, are not at all practical. They are very hard to clean and even harder to get the hamster out of. They can get a bit expensive and really are just not worth what you would pay for them. If you are really drawn to the tubes and mazes, perhaps just get one as a playground but I wouldn't recommend them for their cage. The tubes would have to be taken apart and cleaned each week and that would get pretty old by the second cage cleaning. It is also hard to see you hamster in these kinds of cages.
If you're concerned with finding a cheap way to house just one hamster, here's my suggestion. Purchase a 10 gallon aquarium for $10, a metal tank lid for $10 (sold in the reptile row/area), a chew-proof, climb-proof water bottle (made by Lixit) for $6, a plastic solid 8" exercise wheel by Super Pet (called a Comfort Wheel) (small wheels- anything with a diameter less than 8"- and "normal" metal bar ones are harmful) for $5 and a hut for $5. This will give you the basic set-up for under $40. If you have a Pet Supplies Plus near you, shop there, they're cheaper and carry all the products I've listed.
One of the new alternatives that we hamster breeders are using are plastic bins. These make great cages! They are very inexpensive in that you can buy a bin for less than $10. There is a little bit of manual labor involved but it's worth it. The bins are light and very easy to carry and move and best of all, they are extremely easy to clean. The bedding doesn't stick to them the way it does in any of the above mentioned cages. Get a clear bin and you can easily see your friend. Get one that's tall enough to hold the wheel when the lid is on.
Here is a California Hamster Association article on how to convert a plastic bin:

Depending on the type, one with bars is best it gives the hamster excersize climbing up it, plus you can get one with attachments so it isnt bored. A plastic was is good for starting out but with them the hamster will become bored after awhile so its best to go straight for a barred caged
the best cage for a hamster is a 10 gallon aquarium and probably the cheapest. iall you need is a screen cover that attaches tightly to the tank. hamsters can chew their way out of plastic and wire cages. it is also the easiest to clean. take your hammy out and place him in a clear plastic hamster ball and let him roll around while you are cleaning it!! make sure the cleaning agents you use are safe for animals!
You have to get a cage that has a tiny house and a exercise wheel. Oh yeah, buy some sawdust too and spread it on the base of the cage.
the best design I have had as far as Hamsters go is very simple. just a white grid cage for the top and the four walls and for the bottom it was heavy duty plastic (designed so the bars would snap into grooves halfway up the plastic, it was also easy assembly and only 20$), and believe me, my Hamster tried to chew it's way out theres a hole in every corner (very tiny though no where near big enough to even get a ham's paw through) but the plastic was made so that it could never be able to chew a hole anywhere near being able to escape through. I got it at petsmart and i have never had a ham escape from it. (the other ones I had they did but i always keep my room's door shut so i was able to find them) It is easy to clean though I would put something under it because shaving do go over the sides and make a mess.
I highly recommend critter trail cages. I have the Critter Trail 3 and the Critter Trail 2. They are great cages. If you don't get Critter Trail cages, then make sure you get a cage that does not have wire floors, they can get their feet stuck and they can break. Same goes for the exercise wheel, make sure its plastic. Good Luck!
Its always a good idea to give any rodent a cage with a few levels ... it keeps them busy ... My hamsters cage has three levels ...
The first level is where his main source of food and shelter is as well as his exercises wheel
the second level I have a little hut that has a few differant holes in it .. he like to go up there and nap
the third level is where I put his fresh veggies ... this keeps him active ... he knows where to go to get his veggies
Also once every couple of days I hide about 6 or 7 Little dry treats around in his cage ... this keeps him foraging ... that makes him feel like he is still independent LOL
you should also get him a ball so he can rome around the house for an hour or so!!
Usually the best kind of cage to buy with levels would be a small Rat cage ...

Good Luck
What kind of hammy are you getting? Any hamster cage will work. Its whatever looks like your hamster would have fun in. If you have a Targot somwhere where you live they have a really nice hamster cage. And stuff thats good for your liitle friend.
crittertrail Dazzle sold at petsmart and petco
plastic types of cages would do. just make sure that it is big enough for your pet.
Here is my guide to cages found on my website http://www.freewebs.com/hamsterhighway/i...
It has all you need to know, plus my reccomendations!
Any other question e-mail me @ joe10994@comcast.net
BUT FIRST LOOK AT MY SITE
First, for regular hamsters. The most common type is an Aquarium. They have plenty of good reasons to buy one. One is there is an extremely clear view of your pet. They give enough room to house about four adult dwarfs, or one Syrian and are easy to maintain. They're very inexpensive (approximately $10 if you get a small one). You will need a wire cover as well. They're hard to knock over, safe, and escape-proof, if you get clips for a few bucks. Keep it out of direct sunlight and your hamster will be just fine. The best thing about aquariums, though, is the fact that they're so easy to clean out.

Second, is wire cages. Wire cages are well-ventilated, sturdy, lightweight, fairly easy to clean, and very economical. They cost anywhere from $8 to $20 dollars, depending on size. The only problems are the fact that drafts easily penetrate the cage and can cause pneumonia in the hamster. Also, hamsters tend to kick the bedding out of the cage and make a big mess. Otherwise, these homes are easy to maintain and easy to carry around, plus there are usually a few levels for fun!

Last is HAMSTER PARADISE! Plastic Homes. They have plastic bottoms, wire walls, plastic tops, usually tubes for fun, an exercise wheel, a petting zone, and more! They are commonly refereed to as Crittertrails, Habitrails, or SAM cages. They're colorful, durable, and fun to piece together. Hamsters enjoy them very much. These cages are considerably more expensive than wire cages or aquariums. They range from $30 to $90 dollars. You can buy additional add-on tubes to give your hamster more play areas. Also, water bottles, food bowls, and wheels are positioned on the outside of the home, allowing more running and nesting space for your dwarf. The tubes are a little tricky to clean out, but as long as you clean the cage weekly, it's not usually a problem. They can have infinite Accessories, and are very fun! Perfect for any hamster!
(This Is My Reccomendation, as you can get a small cage, then slowly add on to it as the years go by) (plus its just HAMSTER PARADISE)
------------------------------...
(INCASE YOU GET A DWARF)
For Dwarf Hamsters, the cages have to be a bit different. The plastic homes are ok for fat dwarfs only, (about 30% of the time but you dont want to risk it)because they are too small for the tubes when they are vertical. There are special cages for mice and dwarfs so don't worry. Also, don't get a wire cage if it has bars more then .5 CM apart. There is a high chance the dwarf will be able to squeeze through and escape!!! If i were to get another dwarf, i would get an aquarium tank, they are perfect for them!! GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

i like the 5th and 6th ones. they look like fun for ur gerbils. just be aware that wire floors or platformes could hurt ur gerbil's feet. im not positive it would but just be on the safe side. i think the 5th one would be the best. just make sure theres enough room for all of them. also some of the last ones u posted are way to small. good luck with ur gerbils.
addition:
dont get an aquarium as some one suggested. it has horrible air circulation.
get a 25 gallon aquarium. they are much better. most gerbils spend their whole day chewing through the cage slots. and he will get through eventually. dont get a plastic one. glass aquariums are much better for odor and they can stay warmer. and plus, it keeps the cats or dogs out.

good luck!
The 6th one down looks perfect. Have fun with your little cuties.
I personally like the 5th one. It seems to be the most spacious, you need to check when you go buy the cage that the wire will not hurt your gerbils feet, if they say that for whatever the reason it is harmful on gerbils feet, line the ramp with some carpet.
You will need to take out the wheel. Wire wheels can actually amputate the tuft at the end of a gerbils tail. Alternatively you can just cover the rungs with paper or masking tape to make it safe for your gerbils.
This site is all about gerbil cages:

This site is all about gerbil wheels:

You need to put Gerbil's in a tank, as they will chew anything that is plastic! Take a look in the trade-it maybe, or I don't know if Pets at Home sells tanks! They can be a little pricey, but at least it will keep them inside! Good luck!

What cage is better a tank or cage for my rats?

I am gettin two female rats so should i use a tank or cage
Answers:
A cage, for sure. Rats like to climb up and down the bars of their cage, which is obviously not possible with a tank. Also, two rats will urinate a lot, so they will need good air circulation. Tanks will get filled with ammonia. Also, cages are a lot easier to clean because they have detachable trays.
The cage should be as tall vertically as you can make it. Again, this is because rats love to climb. I use ferret or rabbit cages for my rats, because they come with multiple stories and lots of ladders. A ferret cage like this: http://www.petsolutions.com/images/200/4... is ideal for rats.
Good luck. My bottomline advice: don't get a tank. They will not be happy.
Go for a nice wire cage with at least two levels. You would need at least a 10 gallon + tank for two full grown rats and that's just way too heavy to move to clean. Wire cages allow for better ventilation as well.
The cage I have for mine is 30x30x14 with three levels and I think it's the perfect size for my two rats, but it takes a lot of room, so it's understandable to need a cage that's a little smaller.
A cage, a multi-level one if you can afford it. Just be sure that the spaces between the wires aren't big enough for the rats to escape out of--rabbit cages are unsuitable for rats, for instance, because the wires are spaced too far apart.
They'll enjoy climbing on the wires, and the ventilation will be better. Remember, plastic-bottomed cages are the ideal--with a wire-bottom cage, rats can get bumblefoot.
It depends how big your pets are. If they are babies or pretty small, don't get a cage unless the bars are very close together, or else the pet might squeeze through (it's what happened to me). If the rodent is pretty big, then get a cage.
A tank is for rodents that are pretty small and that they'd sqeeze through cage bars. When my hamster had babies, we put the babies and the mother in the tank. Does that help?
I had one named Stella I bought a cage and he chewed the metal and got out. When I got him a tank he loved it more space and I had latchs for the lid so he couldnt open it.
As the first 2 answers said, a cage is better.
Tanks offer very poor ventalation which can lead to many medical issues. Tanks also give nothing to climb on, rats are climbers, runners and jumpers.
Cages offer optimal ventalation, climbin, jumping and running room.
You should look for an all wire cage with a solid metal bottom. That way they cannot chew through it.
PetSmart has great cages for this. For 2 females, they have an all white wire cage with a purple bottom. It has 3 levels and plenty of space for them. It's very easy to hang toys and comfy beds in.
It costs about $40, but it's well worth it. I have never had an escape problem with these cages and they last the rats life time and then some.
There are a lot of web sites with cages that are great too. If you look around you can find some great things for rats. (Don't use a ferret cage, they are good for adult male rats, but even then it's questionable because most rats can get out of the spaces easily. My biggest adult female can get out of the ferret cages in about 3 seconds.)
I hope this helps...GOOD LUCK!!
cage because it is more comfortable!
well i have two female rats and they live in a 50 gal. tank and they are quite happy in it i know they are expensive but they work great but you could also use a cage for ferrets or chinchillas
I would reccomend a cage!!
A glass tank does not give very good ventalation where a cage would. Plus rats love to climb and a cage allows them to do this

What cage for a guinea pig?

this is an update on my other question sort of. i want to get a skinny pig (hairless guinea pig) and i was wondering if they got any bigger than a regular haired cavy, because i saw one in the petstore that was way bigger than my cavy (maybe my cavy was small?)
also is this cage size big enough for one? (in inches) 42 L x 18 W x 24.5 H around there, please answer
does anyone know any web sites i could get a hairless piggy for under $60 because the ones here are $64 and i think thats kind of expensive thanks
Answers:
I think MemphisGal is wrong.. well ye they do require more care but they are as healthy as a regular guinea pig just with no fur. If your mother cant have a fur guinea pig and u want one than get it. But you will have to spend more money than just 60$, you need suplies, vet bills, and ect. So if u can only spend 60$ dollers than dont buy a guinea pig because it needs proper care that costs more that $60 dollers. But I am a fan of guinea pigs and I think a skinny pig is as great as a regular one but u have to be sure to keep there skin clean and not be to cold or warm
I have two guinea pigs and I'm pretty sure that's roughly the size of their cage and it works great! So that shouldn't be a problem. On sizes I'm not sure so why don't you try googling it and see what you come up with? So sorry I don't know any websites either but once again, try googling. But $4 shouldn't make any difference. If you don't mind paying $60 for one then you shouldn't mind paying $4 more. Good luck with it all and I hope you find a good one.
Hailess pigs have VERY strict requirements. They have to have a heat source to keep warm and are riddled with sickness. Please don't buy one or support the breeding of this kind of pig (or any pig). Hairless pigs have only 1/2 the life span of a normal pig and you will spend 2-3+ times as much on vet bills.
If you have done the research, then you know how horrible it is for these little guys to even exist. They are sickly little guys who live less than half the life span of a normal pig, that's when taken care of perfectly.
If you decide to adopt a skinny pig, just be prepared.

That size cage is too a tad too small. You need at least 36" by 30" for one pig. www.guineapigcages.com
yes that cage would work
Well...
That cage is plenty big!! Even 41 by 20
would be good!! Your piggy is probably
small!!
Hope I helped
~Good luck!
$64 is kind of expensive? Are you prepared to spend HUNDREDS on possible vet bills? Ask yourself that question seriously, and ask your mom, because she's the one who'll probably have to pay them. If the answer is no, don't get the guinea pig.
*they are as healthy as a regular guinea pig just with no fur*
Laughter P, what is your basis for this answer? Go over to GuineaLynx and ask the vet techs and guinea rescues what their experience with hairless pigs is, and I can guarantee they will tell you they are not as healthy.
The hairlessness is a (deliberatly bred) genetic defect, and because of it their immune systems are not as strong as the furred variety. Skin cancer rates are sky high. I don't believe I've ever heard of a Skinny that lives more than a few years (average lifespan for a guinea is 5 to 7).

What cage environment to give a 11 day old baby chinchilla?

I have a blue/grey baby chinchilla (female) 11 days old now. Both mum and baby are doing well. The cage is huge, 6ft tall so I had to modify it after the birth and took away all the pine shelfs in the upper 75% of the cage when baby was born. I didn't want mum dissapearing to the top and leaving baby and I didn't want to risk baby having a bad fall when climbing high.
I was thinking I might put a few of the wooden runs back with a couple of shelves so mum and baby can have a bit more fun. This would give baby a good 2-3ft worth of cage height.
Would that be safe?
Baby is growing up fast and has even been taking a sand bath every day for the last few days.
I would be interested to hear what type of cage environment other people give a 11 day old kit? And also how you change the environment at different age stages?
Answers:
First of all i would recomend blocking any of the higher levels if you can. My chin who recently had chins barley ever went up the cage because she was too busy with breast feeding and cuddling them. The cage- the holes in it should be a max. of 1.5 inchs sometimes they can squeeze through anything! Also you could give them blankets to lay out on the floor of the cage if you have a pull out tray -cage that way their feet won't get stuck. Personally 2-3 ft worth of cage height is a bit too much. if possible just 2 or less is better. one more thing- its recomended by many breeders to wait about 2 weeks until the baby can take a sand bath unless if the kit is being to do it on their own. Well good luck and good health to you and your chins! :P
My chins are in an adapted tank, but I left no shelves higher than 18 inches until the kit was separated and fully independent.
My chins are in a 6ft tall X 6ft long X 4ft wide cage with branches and tunnels all over the place and nothing is changed when the kits arrive
A tank with low shelving perhaps but just in case put soft material of some sort in the bottom of the cage so if it fell because the shelf was too high there would be no injuries.
Good luck by the way =)

What bunny breeds does Petland sell?

Please help thanks again? i made the store more specific.
Answers:
I answered your question in another section of the forum, but I wanted to make it clear that rabbits ARE NOT rodents! They are lagomorphs. And many pet stores market their rabbits as "dwarf," when in fact, they are not. A true Netherland Dwarf won't get any bigger than 2 lbs. when fully grown. They say they're dwarfs because their customers want to purchase an animal that will stay small.
look
It depends on what store it is, some don't sell rabbits. Rabbits are Petland are most likely to be by a breeder that didn't spend time with them and care, etc. You may come up with a mean little rodent that may become agressive and start biting. If you want to adopt, that is the best thing. Go to, www.petfinder.com for a place near you. Oh and to answer, mostly dwarf.

Go to a rescue. You can get a much more socialized bunny.
Don't buy from petland. All your doing is supporting a horrible industry of mass producing animals for profits. Want a rabbit? Go to a rescue organization. You know that you are getting a healthy bunny and it will be better socialized. Also you will be saving this animals life and know exactly what your getting from temperment to health problems.

What breeds of rabbits do most petstores sell? i think they misub=nderstood the question?

Answers:
All of the rabbits in my area are mini holland lops.
Probably the dwarf type of the Dutch...
Dwarfs. Usually others but I don't think most even sell rabbits. Do you mean Misunderstood? They can put up quite a kick. They should never be fed Iceburg lettuce, as it is too watery and may kill it. Rabbits smell a bit, keep in mind that they also shed. They like carrots, (of course) and some fruits and veggies. They also can be trained to do things such as use a litter box! Rabbits can be very nice and tame, while some scratch too. They are medium matienence. They will need to be brushed. If they are not the right pet for you, consider adopting a guinea pig or a hamster, Remember, so many animals trained, happy, healthy and looking for a home need your help!

What breed??

hi i was wondering if anybody new the breed of a hamster it is mostly white white with yellowish patches and has fury fingers like the grinch i say and it is a dwarf???
Answers:
this is difficult because hamsters have been bred into so many wonderful colours and patterns. If its a slightly larger than average hamster it could well be a syrian ( teddybear) hamster. The list of colours they come in is endless. The most common being ginger with a white band or softer markings round the middle, but they can be grey, black, white, spotted, stripey, log haired, albino. The list is endless.
Why not buy a detailed hamster book or google hamster breeds on the internet and see if you can see anything simular to what your thinking of. good luck.
Maybe Russian.
if it is a dwarf it may be russian/chinese...but those are mostly dark grey/blue and white i think.
most hamsters have fur/light fur on the top of their paws, like some people have hairy hands!
if it resembles asmall mouse then it is a winter white. they are a bit rattier than the others. or it is a russian soo look up dwarf pix on google and compare lol
gl
x
it could either be:
russian dwarf
dwarf winter white
dwarf chinease
or
roborovskii (smallest breed)
Colours don't tell everything. If it's a dwarf, then you are probably talking about dwarf hamsters. They are a really tiny breed of hamster. It becomes so small because of the breeding of its ancestors years ago. The continues breeding with different types of hamsters causes it to become smaller %26 smaller.
It depends on the size/colour of the hamster. If it is very small and coloured like you say it could be as dwarf, or it could just be a baby hamster. Or it could be a russian hamster, they are also very small, they are usally a white colour so i would say russian, but you can look on google images to see if there are any pictures like your hamster (then you can work out what it is) Good luck.
I think it is a dwarf hamster. I THINK!

Here are some photos of dwarf hamsters... if it's not one of these check out the syrian gallery. The NHC site has lots of useful info.

There is no such thing as breeds of rats; a rat, is a rat, is a rat.
Since you are a first-time ratty owner I would suggest that you pick your rats by health, friendliness, and good temperament, instead of by type, color, or markings. Unlike the various breeds of dogs, type, color, and markings have nothing to do with the tameability, trainability, or the personality of the rat. All rats are pretty much the same.
Picking for health, and good temperament will give you a good first impression for rats as pets.
Don't get hairless or tail-less rats as your first rats because they require some special care. Get a Standard rat, either top-eared or Dumbo.

"my life has gone to the rats"
I owned a hooded rat for 3 years until she got cancer in her leg. She was a great rat. I was able to let her run around in my room and she would love to give kisses and ride around on my shoulder. This is the only rat I have owned but she was great. Rate86@yahoo.com
Please adopt, rather then buy. I love all types of rats, but they are all prone to upper respiratory infections, so you have to keep an eye on that. They are so much fun though. Good luck. You can e-mail me if you have anyother questions. winprincess@hotmail.com
I breed mink and husky rex's. Rex rats have gorgeous curly fur and whiskers. I am also known to love hairless rats.
Personality wise, colour or type dont make a difference. Mostly its just what you prefer.
cha.lurken@yahoo.co.uk
albino rats have the best temperament. my rat would go everywhere with me, chillin on my shoulder. they also love to swim in the tub. great pets.
Dapper rat, just because it is the most common pet rat. And the best, and sweetes. And cutest!
One that lives a long time--too traumatic when they die. If you can find out what rats live longer let me know as I have been researching this and have found no good answers. We had a hooded "feeder" rat and she lived about 2 years. She was the best pet.

What breed of rat is best for 9 year olds?

Answers:
there is no such thing as "breed" of rat. There are simply variations, or types.
Any kind of rat is great for any person, because they are all about the same . Behavior and temperment varying on the individual rat itself.
Many rat keepers own dumbos, however, I prefer the "regular" rat.
I would not recommend rats period.
eewwweee how about NONE!
Go to the pet store and ask someone which breed of rat (or even mouse or hamster) is best for a young child. They would certainly know better, and might even help you pick out one of the more friendlier of the animals that they sell
A DEAD rat!
if u want a rat then i would go with a "fancy rat" they last pretty long my friend has one and loves it
Any rat breed is good however the common hooded is often the most docile.
Males are more docile and often fall asleep on shoulder or laps but scent alot. Females are more active but dont scent as much.
What I will say is 9 yrs is a bit young unless they are very very grown up 9 year olds. Rats had delicate tails and from experiance I know children seem to think they can be picked up by there tails or use them as a leash which is wrong a rats tail can skin itslelf if it is picked up by it.
Could I recomend a Guinea Pig they live longer ( rats only live 3 years and it is heartbreaking when they go) and there is now a fab variety of indoor and out door living for these cute critters.
Any variety of fancy rat would be great for a nine year old. I believe that rats make the best pets, are fun, and teach responsibility.
Try to get young rats (you want to get more than one because rats are very social) so they can more easily adapt to a new environment. Females are more active and love to play. Males are more laid back and like you to rub them behind the ears. Rats are better than hamsters because they rarely bite and love to be with you!
Ask the people at the petstore if you can hold some before buying and try to find one that is not too scared. Although they still might be a little nervous, they just need time to get used to you. The more you hold them and play with them, the more they will be comfortable with you (and/or the 9 year old).
Good luck finding your ratties!
I got my first rat when I was nine! She's still living upstairs with me! I'm 12 now. I recommend a fancy rat (Sugar was purchased from petsmart).

What breed of mouse has squinty eyes and a pointy nose?

I found a mouse in my house that doesnt look like the other ones i've found. It has a pointier nose, squinty eyes, and its darker in color. Does anybody know what kind of mouse this is?
Answers:
Since you've caught mice before I'm guessing that you are very familiar as to what mice look like. For this one to look so different.....
......I'm thinking that you may have caught a common shrew.

This shrew has a muzzle much longer then a mouse's muzzle, they have squinty little eyes no bigger then the head of a pin, and their coloring can be dark grey.
I've caught a few shrews in my kidhood :)
A mole? You would have had to dig it out of it's earthen burrow as moles live underground, only coming out for nocternal foreys above ground. Once you've seen what a mole looks like I think you'll agree that they don't look, or act, anything like a mouse. I don't think you would find a mole in your house? Baby moles are pink, hairless, and helpless.

all mice... when they are happy they close their eyes partly and when excited or afraid their eyes bug out. all mice have pointy noses... this mouse is probably wild if it is a brownish grey color.

What breed of guinea pig is this?

I really need to know what breed of guinea pig this is!
I'm SO sorry I don't have a picture, as I do not know how to put a picture on, but I will try describing him the best I can. Please read CAREFULLY:
He has medium-long hair, and he has 7 different colours of fur. His fur is not soft, but it is not rough, either. His fur does NOT cover his eyes, and he has black eyes. His fur colours are all different shades of brown, from light brown, to orangish brown. His brothers are Abyssinians, American Shorthairs, and
Tortoishell Guinea pigs. His personality is- athletic, energetic, not a cuddler, curious, and friendly.
I know the personality doesn't matter, but I'm just saying it anyway.
Also please include a link with a picture of the piggy you think I might have! Thanks a lot, and sorry there's no picture!

In Peru, they eat that type. In Third World conditions, you have to survive one way or another.
All guinea pigs are of one 'breed' ... they're guinea pigs (cavy) ... what you want to know is the 'type and color' of your 'piggie' ... and I'm not going to try to tell you THAT from your 'description' ... it' seems just like all other guinea pigs to me ...
I found this list of guinea pigs but don't kow how to post pics either. Look them up on yahoo and then you should be able to match. Hope this helps!
Cavia anolaimae
Cavia aperea, Brazilian Guinea pig: widespread east of the Andes
Cavia fulgida, Shiny Guinea pig: eastern Brazil
Cavia intermedia, Intermediate Guinea pig: Moleques do Sul islands, Santa Catarina, Brazil, first described in 1999

What breed is my guinea pig?

What breed is Rico?
http://s235.photobucket.com/albums/ee243...
Answers:
He appears to be a short haired American; however, I noticed that the ends of the hair shaft appear to stand out a bit %26 look a little rough. That makes me think he may have some Teddy in there too.
When piggies are babies its difficult to tell sometimes exactly what breed they are if you don't know anything about the familial lines. It becomes more evident as they age.
He's a cutie! :)
the best
he looks like a breed called a bicolor. I am not sure though.
BTW he is very cute
this looks like a short guinea pig
Sorry for the useless answer, I have no idea about guinea pig breeds, but I just felt like telling you he's a cutie! I bet you know it already, but he's really sweet!
i dont totally know ,but he is sooooooooooo cute.and adorable.

most likely a mixture if you got him from a pet store, but he is
American Shorthair, Red and White poorly marked Dutch Color Pattern.
I have been breeding and raising show quality Guinea Pigs for 17 years and run a guinea pig rescue. He is adorable though!!!
Animallover Bi-color isnt a breed it is a color Pattern.
Thats why I said he's a MIXTURE. He doesnt look purebred American. Probably has some Teddy in him. You asked what breed he was so I gave you closest resemblence.
He looks a lot like a Teddy (Rex). He's likely not a purebreed though, so he looks like he could have some American in him too.
according to the photo it looks like the coloring is golden agouti (hairs with a black base and red tip) over one eye, the other eye spot is red. I couldn't tell in the pic very well but it looks like his rump has red over it too. So, if he were on a pedigree, his color would be Golden Agouti/Red/and white.
His breed looks like a teddy, but usually teddy's coats stick up more. He might be part american or even part skinny pig. Skinny pigs are naked, hairless cavies with a rough coat like this, they are born with more hair, and as they grow older they lose it. If he is only part skinny then he would have thinner hair than other teddies, and that's probably why it's not standing up straight!
Good luck with Rico! He's a cutie :) I have 6 teddies so yeah...
Hope this helped :)
Awwwwwww he is sooooooo cute!! I am guessing american shorthair? hope this helps!?
He probably a short haired American; however, I noticed that the ends of the hair shaft appear to stand up a bit %26 you said that he is a little rough right? That makes me think he may have some Teddy in there too.
I agree with Justified's answer. BTW, it looks as though your piggie needs a nail trim, especially on the back feet. You'll want to trim them before they cause problems. Good Luck!

What brand of plain pellets should i feed a guinea pig?

i heard that you should feed a guinea pig plain pellets but what brand is best?
Answers:
Kaytee Brand from petco is usually the best brand for all small animals. I have included a link so you may see the product.
http://www.petco.com/product/14642/kayte...
Try Kaytee pellets. I trust them as I feed the rabbit variety to my rabbits and they love them. I'm sure the guinea pig variety is good too.
Oxbow Pellets are good. Their hay is good too, and guinea pigs need a good supply. Check the "Cavy Cuisine" or "Cavy Performance" under the Fortified Feeds section. Visit: http://www.oxbowhay.com
Give it the kind that has the pellets and the vegetables.Guinea pigs love veggies. So yea.
Sleek and Sassy is a very good feed for guinea pigs, but the most important thing to remember when choosing a quality feed is no more than 2.5 % fat and at least 18% protein. It should be made from Alfalfa, and stay away from the kind that have seeds and dried veggies and fruits in it. Oxbow is a decent food, but I highly recommend Sleek and Sassy.
Oxbow,that's the best!
http://www.oxbowhay.com/index.sp...
Oxbow is great. Go to their website and look for a store near you. If there isn't one, you can order online. KM's hayloft is another excellent pellet, you can order from her online. http://kmshayloft.com/
If you MUST get other brands, I suggest Mazuri or Kaytee's.

Great Job looking into what is best for your pig!!
The brand food that his made for guinea pigs.
Oxbow
the animal planets fortified guinea pig food it is very healthy!
Any pellet food that is made for guinea pigs is sutable but what you need to understand is that the pellet food is only a supplement. The primary diet of a guinea pig is fruits vegetables and hay/alfalfa. The guinea pig can not produce its own vitamin C so it needs veggies high in it. LOts of fresh veggies and fruits need to be given everyday along with the pellets. But I think you are on the right track.

What bedding should i be using?

i have a hammy but i dont know what beddign i need
Answers:
carefresh, dont be using pine and cedar
if u have to use between pine and cedar.
use pine its better than cedar
you can use cedar but I read in a Hamster book that they tend to smell more so I use a new type of bedding by "healthy pet" called superior odor control...Its kinda spungy like foam it absorbs the smell and you can buy it in yellow pink or blue.I love it.
I promise, the best bedding you can ever give a hamster is shredded up toilet tissue ( unbleached and unscented ) He will love you for it. Throw it randomly round the cage and he will be kept bust and amused for ages carrying it of somewhere to create a bed. Its also the safest for them to use as bedding ( not to mention the comfiest) it also saves you some pennies too.
Dont be roped into thinking the cute fluffy bedding that is sold in pet shops will be the best. People have been campaigning for years to get this banned. Hamsters can choke on it, and also their limbs can get caught, causing them terrible damage.
I would really suggest carefresh, it's very reliant and can be found almost anywhere. It's very important that you change it after a week, because it will have a strong odor and create bacteria if you don't.
any kind thats paper based is good because wood stuff can cause lung infection. Ripped up toilet paper works wonders for nesting, they love it! just make sure you change the paper once a week or it will get bacteria and such in it and your hammys feet will get red blisters on the bottom :(

What bedding can i use for rabbits?

i have 2 rabbits and i use shredded newspaper for their bedding but im worried that if they eat they might get poisend by the ink. What else can i use?
Answers:
HAY is excellent i tried it
they also use it for building nests and 100 % natural
Care Fresh lined with newspaper
Pretty much any bedding at the pet store but ceder and pine
If they are inside rabbits the normal thing to use is larger broken wood chips.
If they are outside rabbits usually use layered out straw. (stilt cage)
If they are in a cage that sits on the ground outside, wood chips, straw, or dirt* would work. (*messy)
these ones r really good..

hope this helps!
My rabbit has hay and woodshavings - you can also use straw
they like to eat the straw/hay and its good for their teeth and for fibre too!!
hope this is helpful!
Pine is the best for them, but you can also use cedar. I don't see why anyone would tell you that those are bad for rabbits. That is what my vet recommended for my baby. AKA my rabbit.
use critter care oder control! cedar and pine kill rodents!
I suggest you don't use any kinds of ink, pens, crayons in the cage. Some care fresh or shavings. Wood is not healthy for bunnies or any rodents.
personally i use timothy hay. if yours live inside then i dont kno. mine live outside. timothy hay also doubles as food

What are those little rabbits called?

There are these kinds of rabbits that don't grow very much and are rather small. I was wondering what they are called.
Answers:
There are four types of dwarf rabbit
1. Netherland Dwarf
2. Belgian Dwarf
3. Britiania Petite
4. Dwarf Hotot
All of these are very small ranging from 1 1/2 to 3 pounds... the netherland and belgian dwarves are very similar and come in a variety of colors the maximum weight for both is about 3 pounds... the britania petite is a smaller rabbit with a maximum weight of 1 1/2 pounds and come in a smaller variety of colors. the britanias, though, have a reputation for being viscious. The dwarf hotot is another very small rabbit that is similar to the netherland in shape but is ALWAYS white with black rings around its eyes... All dwarf rabbits have a reputation for being mean and unable to be handled... if you are looking for something with a more even temperment, i would suggest a larger breed...
dwarf rabbits
Dwarf Rabbits. I love those things! They are so cute!
dwarf rabbits but be careful when getting one some may grow way bigger than the seller of them says I have many friends who say their dwarf rabbits grow way too big I had one that grew to almost 25 pounds she was huge!!
dwarf rabbits or chinchillas? well, one of those
they are called dwarf
bunnies. they are really cute and they are the smallest bunnies you can get
The Netherland Dwarf is a popular breed of domestic rabbit weighing upto about 1.5kg.
There are several varieties of "dwarf" rabbits. There are Netherland dwarfs, dwarf rex, mini-lops, etc. A lot of people like small bunnies, so breeders have been developing smaller sizes of lots of popular breeds. They aren't really dwarfs, but have been bred down in size from full size rabbits over many generations of breeding the smallest to the smallest.
Neatherland Dwarf are the smallest rabbit. To see all the rabbit breeds go to arba.net .

What are things you have to feed a hamster?

Cuz' my friend has no clue what to feed the hamster..
Answers:
pet stores sell hamster foods. you can even give them lots of different kinds of veggies and fruits...but NO CITRIS FRUITS like oranges. and if your friend has a dwarf hamster...dont feed it too many fruits...this hamster is known to get diabetes very easily. hamsters also like various nuts and seeds (no salt). on occation you can even give them crickets and mealworms...they LOVE IT but it should be a rare treat.
Fresh water is a must.
Vegetables, like, chopped cabbage, carrots, greens.
Nothing hard.
Sunflower seeds, broccoli, cauliflour, Milwaukee Best.
The other answers are good advice but just an FYI, I had a hamster die because I didn't know that their teeth continue to grow. His teeth got so long that he couldn't chew and they're so small you can't really tell. Make sure your friend gives him chew sticks.
all the above answers are correct, but most importantly tell your friend to go to the pet store and get the food its cheap. dont give them too much lettuce as it gives them diarreah, and when picking their food at the pet store go for the stuff thats in the pellet form( all the food looks the same) DONT GET the mixture of sunflower seeds and other nuts, naturally they will pick all the sunflower seeds and its very fattening and unhealthy. also NEVER EVER give the hamster chocolate its poisonous.
Don give them too much cabbage as it cause liver problem for them.. i haf winter white for myself.. n i dun feed them wif cabbage..
I fed mine with nuts and seeds that were bought from pet stores. Sometimes I throw in small carrot chunks, corn or pea pods from the garden and wholemeal bread if I ran out of hamster food.
The main part of there diet is a tablespoon of the commercial hamster food mix you buy from any pet store. This is to be changed everyday, along with fresh water. Add small pieces of fresh fruit and veg to his diet slowly as this can cause an upset belly. Hamsters love broccoli, bananas, apples, mushrooms anyd treats from the pet shop like yogurt drops and a cereal bar to hang in the cage to keep his teeth chizzled down nicely.
Dont ever feed a hamster human treats like crisps, chocolates and sweets, you could well kill it!
Do avoid lettuce, it gives them the runs, and tomatoes, potatoes and onions are poisonous to hamsters.
First it depends on what kind of hamster your friend has. If its a dwarf hamster them it has more specific dietary needs then a Syrian hamster (large breed). All hamster need to be fed a pellet/seed mixture sold at pet stores and some chain stores with a pet department. Feed as much as they will eat daily. Now hamsters will hoard their food so chek for this in corners, under wheels, etc. before feeding again. We usually feed every other day for this reason. A dwarf hamster is treated like a diabetic hamster in that they can't be fed any corn, carrots, peas, commercial treats or any fruits. All these cause diabetes in dwarf hamsters and are to be avoided. A Syrian however can have a lot of different foods. They can have a variety of fruits, veggies, meats, boiled or scrambled eggs, cereals, etc..
II can be emailed for a complete list of foods for either hamster or a diabetic one. I wrote the list for my own use with my small animal rescue, but have had over 30 request for it in the last few months. Please use your email provider for your request, my lists are longer then petqna.com allows in responses. My email is wolfinator25840@yahoo.com Subject: (put your breed of hamster here). I will try to response within 48 hours. I get busy sometimes and don't have time for the computer with 93 pets to care for. All are treated like mine until they find new homes and are adopted out.
Hamster food like the stuff you buy at a pet store and just go to a pet store and they will tell you everything! :)

What are they called?

When I was younger, I liked playing with the black worms that quirled up in a ball. The nick name I call them is 'rollie pollies'. What are they?
Answers:
Pill Bugs are these "Rollie Pollies"
They're fun.
Pill bugs belong to the family Armadillidiidae. The scientific name is Armadillidium vulgare.

Pill bugs, also called a "potato bug" or "doodle bug", is actually called a wood louse. Although commonly thought of as insects, they are actually crustaceans, the same as a lobster, crab, or crayfish. The body of the pill bug is composed of several segments. Using special muscles the pill bug can roll itself into a ball, leaving only it's tough outer shell exposed. This distinguishes from the sow bug, which appears similar to the pill bug but cannot roll itself into a ball.

Pill bug can typically be found in dark, damp places such as the underside of rocks, fallen trees, and deep grasses. They typically hide during the day, coming out only at night to feed. Some desert-dwelling pill bugs will even burrow deep into the sand to avoid the daytime heat.
Hope that helped...
Rolly Polly's
Pill bugs.
"rollie pollies" are also known as "potato bugs". they're harmless to humans
Armadillidium vulgare
(pill bugs, sow bugs, rolly pollies)
Armadillidium is a genus of the small terrestrial crustacean known as the woodlouse. Armadillidium are also commonly known as "pill woodlice", "pill bugs" or "roly-polies", and are often confused with pill millipedes such as Glomeris marginata. They are characterised by their ability to roll into a ball when disturbed. They typically feed on moss, algae, bark and other decaying organic matter. They are usually found in moist areas such as decomposing leaf matter and soil.
The colouration especially of young A. klugii resembles the red hourglass marking of the Mediterranean black widow Latrodectus tredecimguttatus. This is probably a kind of mimicry, to ward off predators that mistake the harmless animal for a venomous spider.
Unlike other arthropods such as insects and spiders, pill bugs do not have a waxy cuticle that would reduce evaporation from their bodies. Pill bugs also use modified gills, called pseudotrachea, for respiration, and the gills must remain moist to function. Individual pill bugs typically live for two or three years, and females brood eggs once or twice each summer. Several hundred eggs are brooded at a time in the marsupium, a pocket on the ventral side of the female pill bug. The marsupium must also be kept filled with water until the young hatch and crawl away.
they are called pill bugs but ar e more commonly known as rollie pollies
might be a pill bug like what has been said, but that is a bug not a worm, and sorry, but it is very gross.
pill bugs, sow bugs, rolly pollies
and they aren't worms, they are insects
terrestrial isopods aka pill bugs akasow bugs aka rollie pollies.
they are called pill bugs.
I used to play with them when I was a kid too.
potato bugs. (dont they look like potatos?)
the ones i'm thinking of are the long black ones that are shiny? aren't they centepedes
When I was little i called them "doodle bugs", but i don't think thats their real name.

What are these treebark-looking things that are appearing in my hamsters cage?

I looked in my hamster cage a couple of weeks ago, and I saw something that resembles treebark. I smelled it, and it smelled kind of like dry fruit, but still looked like a ripped off piece of treebark. I looked today, and I saw an even bigger one. Im kind of stumped on what this could be.
By the way, im using cedar if it has something to do with that. And YES I know its not good for them, im switching to aspin soon.
Answers:
I have two female dwarf hamsters. They use cedar shavings too, but I know, it's not good for them, the bag says NO OILS on it. Anyways, I have found a few looking log pieces in the bedding before too. They are just pieces that didn't get cut all way when it was at the factory.
I hope that this answers your question!
probably from the bedding.it wont harm them(the treebark looking thing)
use super shavin's sold at petsmart and petco. the things you see are pieces of cedar twig i guess.
it could be the cedar. instead of aspin shavings it would be better to use the papery type of bedding (it does not have the oils that cause respitory problems).
